How it's calculated
The wet volume is scaled to dry volume — ×1.54 for concrete, ×1.33 for mortar and plaster — and the sand share of the mix ratio is taken. Weight uses a bulk density of about 1600 kg/m³ for river sand (1 cft ≈ 45 kg).
Sand volume = wet volume × dry factor × (sand share of ratio). Tonnes = m³ × 1.6.

Frequently asked questions
Sand for 1 m³ of M20?
About 0.42 m³ (~15 cft, ~0.67 tonnes), before wastage.
How much does a cubic foot of sand weigh?
Roughly 45 kg for river sand at ~1600 kg/m³; damp sand weighs a little more.
Which factor — 1.54 or 1.33?
1.54 for concrete; 1.33 for mortar and plaster.
