How it's calculated
The National Savings Certificate is a 5-year post-office savings certificate. Interest is compounded annually at the rate notified when you buy it, but it is paid only at maturity: maturity value = amount × (1 + rate)^5. Each year's accrued interest is taxable in that year, although the interest for years 1 to 4 is treated as reinvested and so also qualifies for the Section 80C deduction under the old tax regime.
Example: ₹1,00,000 at 7.7% grows to ₹1,44,903 — ₹44,903 of interest.
The rate is fixed for the certificate at the rate prevailing when you buy it; the quarterly rate change applies only to new purchases. There is no 80C deduction under the new tax regime. The post-tax yield is approximate: rate × (1 − slab × 1.04 for cess).
