Enter any area and unit to convert it instantly into square feet, gaj, square metre, marla, kanal, bigha, biswa, killa, acre and hectare. Marla and kanal use the North-India standard; bigha varies by state, so pick yours below.

Marla & kanal shown are the standard North-India values (Punjab / Haryana / HP). Bigha and biswa follow the state you choose above — these differ across India, so always confirm against the local sale deed or revenue record.

The units, and why they differ

India uses both metric units and traditional land measures that change from region to region. In the north, plots are quoted in gaj (square yards), marla and kanal; in the south you'll hear cent and ground; in the west, guntha; and almost everywhere in the Hindi belt, bigha — which is the trickiest because its size isn't fixed nationally.

Quick reference (North India): 1 gaj = 9 sq ft · 1 marla = 272.25 sq ft · 1 kanal = 20 marla = 5,445 sq ft · 1 killa = 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft · 1 hectare = 2.471 acres.

Because bigha can mean anything from ~12,000 to ~27,000+ sq ft depending on the state, never accept a bigha figure without knowing which standard it uses. The state selector above applies the most commonly cited local value.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet in 1 marla?
272.25 sq ft in the North-India standard. 20 marla = 1 kanal = 5,445 sq ft.
How many gaj in 1 marla?
1 marla = 272.25 sq ft = 30.25 gaj (square yards), since 1 gaj = 9 sq ft.
Why does bigha keep changing?
Bigha is a traditional unit never standardised nationally, so each state (and sometimes district) settled on its own size — "pucca" and "kaccha" bigha differ too. Use the state selector and verify locally.
