How it's calculated

The Post Office Monthly Income Scheme pays interest every month on the amount you deposit: monthly income = deposit × annual rate ÷ 12. The deposit is locked for 5 years and returned in full at maturity. The limit is ₹9 lakh for a single account and ₹15 lakh for a joint account of up to three adults — and each holder's share, including shares in joint accounts, counts towards ₹9 lakh. The minimum is ₹1,000 in multiples of ₹1,000.

Example: at 7.4%, ₹9 lakh earns ₹5,550 a month and ₹15 lakh earns ₹9,250 a month.

The rate is fixed for the account when you open it. Interest is not compounded — to compound it, reinvest each month's payout yourself (for example in a recurring deposit or SIP). Closing after one year but before three costs 2% of the deposit; after three years, 1%.

Frequently asked questions

How much monthly income does ₹9 lakh in Post Office MIS give?
At the 7.4% rate notified for October–December 2026, ₹9 lakh earns ₹5,550 a month (₹66,600 a year), and a ₹15 lakh joint account earns ₹9,250 a month. The rate that applies is the one on the day you open the account.
Is Post Office MIS interest taxable?
Yes. It's taxed at your slab as income from other sources. The post office doesn't normally deduct TDS, but you must report the interest yourself. There is no Section 80C benefit on MIS.
MIS, SCSS or a bank FD for monthly income?
SCSS pays more but is only for people aged 60 and above and has a ₹30 lakh limit. MIS is open to any adult with lower limits, and bank FDs with monthly payout vary by bank and tenure. Compare using the SCSS and FD calculators.
