How it's calculated

Each month your contribution (12% of basic + DA, plus any VPF) and your employer's share go into the provident fund. Of the employer's 12%, 8.33% — on wages up to ₹15,000, so a maximum of ₹1,250 — is diverted to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), and only the rest reaches your EPF balance. Interest is worked out monthly on the running balance at the declared rate and credited once a year, so it compounds annually.

Example: a 30-year-old with ₹30,000 basic + DA, a 6% yearly raise and the standard 12% contribution reaches roughly ₹1,47,61,648 by 58 — ₹29,60,414 from their own contributions, ₹25,40,582 from the employer and ₹92,60,651 from interest.

Interest is calculated on each month's opening balance (a slightly cautious approach); EPFO's passbook can differ by small amounts. Salary growth, contribution rules and the rate are assumptions — the EPF rate is declared once a year. Interest on your own contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year is taxable.

Frequently asked questions

What is the current EPF interest rate?
The EPF rate for FY 2025-26 is 8.25%, approved by EPFO's trustees and ratified by the government, unchanged for the third year in a row. The rate is declared yearly, and this calculator reads it from the site's rates file.
Is EPF interest tax-free?
Within limits, yes. Interest on your own contributions up to ₹2.5 lakh a year is tax-free, and a withdrawal after five years of continuous service isn't taxed. Interest on yearly contributions above the limit is taxable.
What is VPF and should I use it?
Voluntary Provident Fund lets you contribute more than the mandatory 12%, up to 100% of basic + DA, and it earns the same EPF rate. Your employer's contribution stays at 12%. Try the VPF slider to see the effect, then plan the rest of your retirement with the NPS and retirement calculators.
